Cabot’s Sustainability Initiatives

Cabot has been practicing sustainability since the very beginning—reimagining a former coal mine in Cape Breton and breathing new life into the land and community. We believe that the longevity of a course requires environmental sustainability and community stability. Being able to employ the wonderful people who live in these great places is central to making the operations sustainable. Cabot will continue to prioritize this ethos of building special properties to stand the test of time, and our full team remains dedicated to working in harmony with the surrounding environments in which we’re privileged to touch.

Audubon International
Global Partnership

We are thrilled to have an exclusive partnership with Audubon International, an environmentally-focused non-profit organization that designates numerous certifications and conservation initiatives to protect the areas where we live, work, and play. Cabot has become the largest company to enroll every destination into Audubon International’s comprehensive Platinum Signature Sanctuary certification program.

To achieve the certification, courses must undergo a rigorous certification program and maintain a high standard of environmental quality in:

Outreach & Education
Chemical Use Reduction & Safety
Water Conservation
Water Quality Management

SchoolsPlus

In the spirit of growing the game, Cabot Cape Breton partners with SchoolsPlus Inverness County. This program provides need-based fee registration and transportation to our junior camps, and Cabot Cape Breton reserves up to two spots in each camp for members of the SchoolsPlus program. Growing the game with the next generation of golfers is a shared passion for all our golf professionals throughout the Cabot portfolio.

Scholarships

Every year, Cabot Cape Breton awards staff members tuition funds through the Pathway to Success Scholarship Program. Team Members who are currently studying in the Maritimes in various programs including Culinary Arts, Hospitality Management, Tourism and Travel Management, and Golf Operations are eligible recipients. With so many seasonal team members being students, it brings great pride to be able to assist them in their academic journeys.

Caddie School for Soldiers

The Caddie School for Soldiers is an amazing non-profit organization designed to help Canadian, American, and UK veterans transition to civilian life by training them to become caddies. Since establishing the school in 2019, the Caddie School for Soldiers has positively impacted the lives of dozens of veterans. Once extensive caddie training is complete, alumni depart with a new sense of peace, purpose, camaraderie, and a newfound belief in themselves. We are proud and grateful to have members of the Caddie School for Soldiers as part of our caddie yard at Cabot Cape Breton who work tirelessly and vigorously for the benefit of our golfers’ on-course experience.

To reduce our environmental impact across our collection of destinations, we have made several operational commitments.

Audubon International

Cabot is the exclusive environmental stewardship partner with Audubon International. In this exclusive, groundbreaking partnership, we are proud to become the largest destination company to enroll every golf course and “built” element into this comprehensive, all-inclusive Platinum Signature Sanctuary certification program.

Bird & Bat Boxes

Bird and Bat Boxes have been installed throughout Cabot Cape Breton in efforts to provide safe nesting sites and contribute to the conservation of bird and bat species. These strategically placed houses throughout the resort support and maintain the local biodiversity.

Aluminum Water Bottles

Each Cabot property now offers aluminum, re-usable water bottles in efforts to reduce plastic waste, conserve resources, and promote environmentally friendly alternatives. Aluminum is highly recyclable and reduces the overall environmental impct and energy consumption associated with the production and disposal of beverage containers. By establishing partnerships with companies like Path and North Water Co., Cabot provides guests with a nicely branded bottle that they are encouraged to refill throughout and beyond the duration of their visit.

Gopher Tortoise

Prior to re-constructing the golf courses at Cabot Citrus Farms, the team safely rehomed 26 endangered gopher tortoises in collaboration Saving Florida’s Gopher Tortoises. The unique creatures have a lifespan over 60-years and are well-known for their extensive burrow systems, which they dig for shelter and protection, extending several meters in length. The Florida based, non-profit organization, Saving Florida’s Gopher Tortoises, works to preserve endangered gopher tortoises and relocate them to the safety of the Eglin Air Force Base, located in the Florida panhandle.

Monarchs in the Rough

Cabot Citrus Farms is proud to be part of Monarchs in the Rough, an inspiring initiative from Audubon International that supports golf properties in restoring and protecting vital habitat for monarchs and other pollinators. The program provides courses with regionally appropriate milkweed seed, signage, and expert support to help bring biodiversity back to the landscape - one fairway at a time.

Cabot Golf, one of the world’s most highly regarded operators of pilgrimage resorts with “must play courses” from Scotland to Canada, is also working with Audubon.

When we invest in the locations we do, we’re making an investment over the incredibly long term — in the place, the site and the community.

Routed by Rod Whitman and Dave Axland, The Nest sits atop the highest point of Cabot Cape Breton, a designated Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.
